How does a random student picker without repeats work?
A random student picker without repeats chooses from the students who are present and have not been selected in the current round. After each Selection, the Winner leaves the eligible pool. Keep selecting until everyone has one turn, then choose Start New Round to reuse the roster and current absence choices.
Prepare the class list before you project it
Paste one student per line and replace the sample Entries on your first edit. Scan the list for accidental duplicates. Each row is a separate Entry, so two identical rows would give that label two places in the pool. Use initials, first names, or familiar classroom aliases when a full name is unnecessary.
Disable anyone who is absent without deleting the Entry. The disabled name stays on the setup list and cannot be selected. This makes attendance changes easier to reverse while keeping the projected pool accurate for the current lesson.
What does no repeats mean for a classroom round?
No repeats means every completed Selection excludes its Winner from later Selections in the same Session. A class of twenty enabled students therefore has twenty eligible positions in that round. The Tool reaches Complete after the twentieth student has been selected once.
Undo restores the exact state before the latest Selection, including the Winner and eligible pool. Use it for a genuine mis-click or setup error. Start New Round appears when the eligible pool is empty. It restores excluded Winners while keeping the pasted list and disabled absences. Reset instead returns the Template to its sample Entries after confirmation.
Use a random student picker with a clear pass rule
Tell the class how the round works before the first spin. Explain that each present student can appear once, say what will happen after a pass, and give enough thinking time before asking for a response. The Selection identifies the next invitation. It does not judge effort, confidence, or knowledge.
A pass can remove pressure without hiding the process. The teacher may invite the student later, move to a volunteer, or use another agreed response format. Apply the same announced rule throughout the round and follow individual learning, accessibility, and wellbeing accommodations first.
Random student picker or presentation order generator?
Use this Random Student Picker when the class needs one next student for a question, classroom role, reading turn, or short contribution. The Wheel reveals one Winner at a time and keeps a visible history of completed Selections.
Use the Student Presentation Order Generator when everyone needs a numbered sequence prepared before the first talk. The comparison with popsicle sticks also explains when a browser Tool or a physical draw is easier to verify and run.
Keep student names private on the classroom screen
Entries stay in the browser by default. Avoid grades, behaviour notes, contact details, disability information, or any label the room does not need to see. Review the list before sharing the screen and read the Winner aloud so the animation is not the only way students receive the result.
Saved Setups remain on the current device. A Shared Setup puts its data in the URL fragment, which is not sent in the page request, though anyone with the full link can still read it. Presentation Mode is always ad-free. Read the privacy approach and randomness method before using real classroom labels.
